Let A, B, C, and D be sets such that C = A U B and D is a subset of C. How do we prove that D = (D intersect A) U (D intersect B)? That's what we'll go over in today's set theory lesson. We need to use the definitions of subset, set equality, and set intersection and union in order to prove our desired subset relations, thus proving the equality! If you're familiar with probability theory, this may strike you as being somewhat similar to the law of total probability.
