(20 Mar 1980) Anti-apartheid demonstrators march in Paris demanding the release of James Mange, under sentence of death in South Africa for anti-apartheid activities. The march organised by the communist-led by the unions CGT (General Confederation of Workers) demanded his released, he was sentenced in November last year. The march goes to the South African embassy and at a meeting speakers demand an end to all forms of economic and military cooperation between France and South Africa. The demands come at a time when South Africa is re-thinking some of its apartheid views because of the successful black revolution in neighbouring Rhodesia. Calls have been made in black Sunday newspapers for the release of the political leader Nelson Mandela and other African National Congress leaders from their Robben Island jail to take part in the multi-racial conference which the South African Prime Minister, Mr PW Botha, has proposed.
