What are Mercilon Tablets?

Mercilon is a combined oral contraceptive pill, also more typically known as ‘the pill’. It is prescribed to women to prevent pregnancy, as well as to treat particularly heavy, painful, or irregular periods. Mercilon tablets contain two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and desogestrel. These are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. Ethinylestradiol is a synthetic version of oestrogen and desogestrel is a 'third generation' synthetic form of progesterone. Mercilon works by preventing ovulation. Since no egg is released from the ovaries fertilisation cannot occur.
