Zerlina, Dairy lecturer in Kildalton college will talk to us about antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobials are medicines that we use to target pathogens such as bacteria, fungi that can cause disease in both animals & humans. They are used to kill or stop the growth of these pathogens. Can be abbreviated by 'AMR', humans and animals can develop a resistance over time and that's because of antimicrobials being used in an efficient manner. Its very important that the use of microbials is strictly for the treatment of active infections and not for the prevention of infections. During the milking year, a cow is gonna suffer from infection and I particular an udder infection. It's important that we treat that cow and take a milk sample to discover what pathogen is causing the infection. If the results appear that the cow is in fact infected, the cow need to be treated with antimicrobial such as a antibiotic. The antibiotic comes in a tube form and you apply it by inserting it into the cows utter. It's critical that the infected cow is treated for the prescribed amount of days on the antibiotic. Scientists believe that by 2050, we could have more deaths globally from AMR than cancer. When the infected cow is being treated, we cannot let the milk from the cow into the bulk tank. Zerlina takes us through the test for antibiotics that can be found in milk if a cow is untreated. The test takes 3 minutes.
