WELCOME to my FREE “Introduction to Mock Trial” program appropriate for prospective/current law students, college students and high school students - and even really motivated middle schoolers. "Introduction to Mock Trial" is a 10-part series and a program/course designed to introduce you to all aspects of mock trial. The topics are set out below in this description. In this first part, Mock Trial Basics, I cover the: (i) players and roles of mock trial; (ii) the parts and order of mock trial; (iii) the geography of mock trial; (iv) the rules and customs of mock trial; and, (v) the limits and goals of mock trial. Mock Trial Basics is broken down into two videos - 1.1 and 1.2. I will set out some work for participants with some of the videos; here, your work is to watch some good legal movies or television shows and test out some of the concepts covered in the "basics" videos. ABOUT ME: Professor Wes Porter served as a trial attorney with the Department of Justice's Criminal Division, Fraud Section, in Washington D.C., the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Hawaii and the JAG Corps for the U.S. Navy stationed in the Trial Service Office Pacific. After lecturing, coaching mock trial and teaching as an adjunct professor for years, he moved to academia full-time teaching courses in Evidence, Criminal Law and Procedure, and skills courses like Trial Advocacy. Professor Porter earned tenure, became a full professor of law, and led a center devoted to litigation and trial skills training.
