YANGWOOD focuses on playing jaw harps from diverse cultural traditions, as well as the didgeridoo, a low-pitched wind instrument from Australia. At the same time, drawing on his background as a Master of Fine Arts, he has created numerous illustrations that extend their artistic practice into a vivid interplay between the visual and the auditory. As a multi-instrumentalist, KUN mainly plays the violin and the mbira in this duo. He also performs with a custom Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI), using it to control various physically modeled wind timbres, including clarinet, bassoon, flute, saxophone, trumpet, and more. In addition, he incorporates syllables from his native language into vocal chants. Beyond performance, he is responsible for the overall musical architecture of the works, sound design, recording, and final mixing and production. In the height of the Yisi summer, they recorded “双管曲” and “管弦歌” in Chengdu. They then set off on a joint journey to Xinduqiao in western Sichuan. Near the beautiful “Sama Linka Camp,” they developed further improvisations based on the structural framework of these two pieces, weaving in the surrounding natural soundscapes. These evolving works were named “木弄Mu Nong” and “木雅Mu Ya,” allowing the music to grow freely amidst mountains and wilderness. Thank you for watching and listening. Gratitude to music.
