Squint (भेंगापन) or strabismus is a condition in which the eyes are misaligned, causing one eye to deviate inward, outward, or even vertically. Dr. Pradeep Sharma, Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, and Neuro Services at Centre For Sight, New Delhi, explains the causes, symptoms, and treatments for squint, emphasizing early diagnosis and proper care. What is Squint (Strabismus)? Squint, medically known as strabismus, occurs when the eyes do not align properly. Normally, the brain coordinates both eyes to focus on the same object. However, in squint, one or both eyes may point inward (esotropia), outward (exotropia), or vertically (hypertropia or hypotropia). This misalignment can result in double vision (diplopia) or blurred vision, which can be distressing for individuals, especially children. Types of Squint: 1. Horizontal Squint (Esotropia and Exotropia): o Esotropia refers to the inward turning of one or both eyes. o Exotropia refers to the outward turning of one or both eyes. 2. Vertical Squint (Hypertropia and Hypotropia): o Hypertropia refers to one eye being positioned higher than the other. o Hypotropia refers to one eye being positioned lower than the other. 3. Torsional Squint: Torsional squint causes the eyes to rotate around the vertical axis, leading to double vision or misalignment. This condition is often associated with certain neurological disorders or injuries. Symptoms of Squint (Strabismus): • Double Vision (Diplopia): The most common symptom of squint is double vision, as the brain receives two different images from each eye. • Eye Misalignment: The most obvious symptom is the misalignment of the eyes, which can be seen as one eye turning inward, outward, or vertically. • Reduced Vision in One Eye (Lazy Eye): In children, if squint is left untreated, the brain may suppress the vision in the misaligned eye, leading to lazy eye (amblyopia) and permanent loss of vision in that eye. Causes of Squint: Squint can occur due to various factors: 1. Genetics: Family history plays a role in the development of strabismus. 2. Neurological Issues: Conditions such as brain tumors, head trauma, or neurological disorders can cause squint. 3. Poor Eye Muscle Control: Imbalance in the eye muscles can lead to strabismus. 4. Eye Conditions: Certain eye problems, like refractive errors, can contribute to the development of squint. Treatment of Squint: 1. Corrective Glasses: In some cases, glasses may help correct strabismus, especially if the cause is related to refractive errors. 2. Prisms: Prism glasses are used to help realign the eyes and eliminate double vision. 3. Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be needed to correct the alignment of the eyes. The procedure involves adjusting the eye muscles to ensure both eyes focus in the same direction. 4. Vision Therapy: Vision therapy includes exercises and treatments designed to improve eye coordination and focusing ability. Dr Profile: https://www.centreforsight.net/doctor...
