Adamello Brenta: 2,430m Ascent to a Via Ferrata (Hike)

I began my hike at Lake Molveno in the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark and the largest protected area in Trentino, Italy. Starting at 800 meters, I ascended through misty forests with a backpack packed with supplies, navigating steep trails and rugged terrain. My first stop was at Rifugio Malga Andalo, a picturesque alpine hut, before continuing into an area marked as bear territory, a reminder of the park’s successful efforts to reintroduce the brown bear to the Italian Alps. Pushing onward, I reached Rifugio Selvata at 1,650 meters, surrounded by vibrant autumnal forests. The dense fog lifted as I climbed higher, revealing sharp rock formations and leading me above the clouds. At Rifugio Tommaso Pedrotti, I paused for a quick breakfast of yogurt and granola and rang the bell at Capella del Redentore, a chapel perched high on the mountain. Later in the hike, I encountered a via ferrata, a secured climbing route along the cliffs. With daylight fading, I strapped on my helmet and quickly navigated this technical section. My final stop before descending was Rifugio Val d’Ambiez, a charming mountain refuge with a distinctive red roof. From there, I made a rapid descent to avoid being caught in the dark, finishing the day with a refreshing swim in Lake Molveno. In total, the hike covered 31.3 kilometers with an elevation gain of 2,430 meters, taking just under 10 hours. The Adamello Brenta Natural Park, home to 41 glaciers, 48 lakes, and over 90 brown bears, provided a challenging and rewarding experience. Its rich biodiversity, with species such as chamois, ibex, and golden eagles, highlighted the park’s significance as a conservation area in the Alps.
