We use the Love to Dream swaddle where she can still somewhat move her arms. At naptime, she can only nap if she’s fully swaddled with her arms in. Should babies 4 months and older exclusively use sleepsacks instead of swaddles? If so, what’s the best way to transition?” This is a fantastic question! We don’t really go by ages when we’re talking about swaddling and transitioning out. The Sign to Stop Swaddling Instead, the sign that your baby does not need to be swaddled any more is when she starts to show signs that she wants to roll. Not when she has fully mastered rolling. As soon as she shows signs during the day when she’s on a mat on the floor, and she’s just showing you that she’s starting to move side to side. She’s starting to put one arm down to help her roll over. THAT is when you need to go, “Okay, there’s no more swaddling!” It’s kind of an abrupt thing. “Oh gosh, I can’t swaddle her, starting today! What am I going to do? She loves to be swaddled!” But it really is something you need to pay attention to. You do need to stop swaddling straight away, as soon as you see signs of rolling. You don’t want her to master rolling in the night, when she’s swaddled. Safe Swaddling Sleep Position Babies that are swaddled should always sleep on their backs. A baby that’s placed on its tummy while swaddled is a really, really dangerous sleeping position, because your baby has no range of movement. They have no way to get themselves out of an unsafe sleep position, if they happen to get their little nose pressed against the mattress or the side of the bed. You want to give your baby an advantage by putting them on their back. But the minute they show signs that they’re moving around and that they might be able to put themselves onto their tummy, then you want to stop swaddling straight away! If Your Baby’s Not Showing Signs of Rolling: If your 4 month old is not showing signs that she’s wanting to roll at all, then you don’t have to stop swaddling her. I would only do it once she shows signs. What’s great is you’re already using the Love to Dream Swaddle. If it’s the one where you can take the arms off, then you’re set up for success! So many parents write to me telling me they LOVE the Love to Dream swaddle. How To Transition Your Baby When she’s starting to show signs of rolling, what the makers of the Love to Dream swaddle recommend is that you take off one arm. Let her sleep with one arm out for 2-3 nights. After that, you take off the second arm. You can leave her in the sleepsack she’s become familiar with and that she’s used to. But now her arms are free, which makes it a lot safer for her. So for you, my tips are pretty easy: Keep doing what you’re doing! Once she shows you during play-time in the day that she’s starting to roll, I would go ahead and remove one of the arms for a few nights. Then, remove the second arm by the third night, just to make sure that she is totally safe. If You Don’t Have the Love to Dream Swaddle: For other parents who aren’t using the Love to Dream and are wondering how they can transition your baby out of the swaddle, I recommend investing in the Love to Dream or the Zipadee Zip. Have it washed and ready to go. Then as soon as your baby shows signs of wanting to roll, you can switch from the swaddle to the transition blanket. I hope that helps answer all your questions about swaddling and your 4 month old!
