Join me on a scenic journey through Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments, two of northern Arizona’s most fascinating and contrasting landscapes. Connected by a 34-mile loop just north of Flagstaff, this route takes you from the cool Ponderosa pine forests around Sunset Crater, where a volcanic eruption 1,000 years ago reshaped the land, to the vast, open desert where ancient Puebloan ruins still stand. We’ll walk the Lava Flow Trail, explore dramatic cinder cones, and learn how Indigenous communities adapted to life after the eruption. Continuing the loop, we descend into Wupatki National Monument, home to some of the Southwest’s most impressive ancestral Puebloan sites, including the massive Wupatki Pueblo and the uniquely perched Wukoki Pueblo. Discover how volcanic ash enriched the soil and supported farming in an otherwise dry region. Along the way, we’ll visit both visitor centers, explore short accessible trails, and take in sweeping desert views. Whether you’re into geology, history, or just incredible scenery, this drive offers a powerful look at how fire and people shaped this land.
