For our next Downstream IRL, on 17 November in London, Aaron Bastani will be talking to Cory Doctorow about why the internet sucks now. Get your ticket here: http://novara.media/4hqMemn Sign up for the new Downstream newsletter: novara.media/downstreamnewsletter Iran has been in the news a lot in 2025. After years of a shadow war with Israel - via Hamas, Hizbullah, Yemen and Syria - the two countries finally targeted one another during the 12 Day War in June. That was the second time Iran had attacked Israel in a year, and the first time Israel had been subject to sustained aerial assault in its history. While Tel Aviv was able to inflict major damage on Iranian infrastructure, and assasinate dozens of its most influential military and political figures, Tehran stood firm. Beyond simple survival, events in June seemingly served to rally support, if not for the government than some of its doctrines of self-defence, not least 'forward defence'. Joining Aaron on Downstream this week is Vali Nasr, professor of Middle East Studies and International Affairs at Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of 'Iran's Grand Strategy', and has previously written about the Shia revival and the geopolitical implications of a growing middle class across the Muslim world. In this interview Nasr traces the roots of Iran’s foreign and domestic policy, from western imperialism through the revolution, and into the present day. What have been Iran’s failures and successes, domestically and beyond its borders, in the years since the revolution? Why does a country with no conventional airforce or navy find itself enmeshed in so many conflicts overseas? Does Iran sincerely support the cause of Palestinian liberation? Is it pursuing a nuclear capability? And as the leadership of the Revolutionary Guard grows old, what will the country do next? 00:00 Introduction 02:02 The Islamic Republic’s move to a post-revolutionary state 11:44 Iranian foreign policy 21:20 Forward defence 34:08 Innovation and self-reliance in Iranian society 44:19 Iranian Foreign Policy 56:23 Historic Iranian nationalism and the Islamic Republic 04:56 Arbaeen: the biggest pilgrimage in the world 1:09:31 Iranian raves 1:19:20 Iran’s relationship to Palestine 1:25:34 Nuclear strategy Support our work: http://novara.media/support Buy Novara Media merch: https://shop.novaramedia.com/
