This is a well-known issue on these engines, and here we get to the root cause step by step. • The video shows the entire disassembly process, starting with gearbox removal and progressing all the way to the timing drive and oil pump chain. We methodically remove the timing chain, oil pump chain, tensioner, and guides, inspecting each component to identify the true source of the noise. As expected, the main problem is the original timing chain tensioner without a gasket, a weak point that often leads to chain rattle. The repair plan includes replacing the complete timing drive with an updated tensioner design to ensure long-term reliability. • During disassembly, we also discover severe intake system contamination, another typical issue on 1.6 CDTI diesel engines. The video demonstrates intake cleaning using walnut blasting, a process that employs crushed walnut shells as an abrasive to safely remove heavy carbon buildup.
