(18 Sep 1995) English/Nat A huge relief effort was underway in the U-S Virgin Island for victims of Hurricane Marilyn, six years to the day after Hurricane Hugo hit the Caribbean. Hurricane Marilyn is now within 435 miles of Bermuda. Hurricane Marilyn was the seventh hurricane to hit the U.S. Virgin Islands this year. And it was easily one of the worst. The tropical storm whipped through the island of St. Thomas leaving its 50,000 residents to salvage what they could. Others took to looting. About 100 U-S marshals arrived on the island to help stop the sporadic looting - prompted by memories of looting on St. Croix island after Hurricane Hugo tore through the island. While the police struggled to keep order, many wandered the streets looking for help. There was no confirmation of the number of casualties but authorities initially reported between three and six deaths on St. Thomas. A hospital worker in St. Croix, another of the Virgin Islands, reported two deaths there and two people were reported killed in Puerto Rico. The U.S. sent seven military planes carrying plastic sheeting, water, and emergency medical supplies. The hurricane caught some tourists by surprise. SOUNDBITE: This was the worst that I could have imagined. I, you know, I wouldn't want to go through that again. SUPER CAPTION: St. Thomas tourist (no name given) Efforts are underway to help around 300 stranded tourists get back home. The Governor of Puerto Rico toured the small island of Culebra - also badly hit by Hurricane Marilyn. SOUNDBITE: "I would say we have a critical situation here in Culebra. Most of the people are well provided for, there have been no deaths to our knowledge and no major injuries, but mostly it's a question of loss of property." SUPER CAPTION: Pedro Rosello, Governor of Puerto Rico. Houses were smashed and pleasure boats tossed on to the roads and beaches.
