It shares the septet instrumentation, the 32-bar AABA form, and the harmonic framework (the chord progressions of “How High the Moon” in F major) with the official master recording (Dial 1002 A), but differs significantly in solo content, phrasing density, and duration. The title “Bird Lore” is a deliberate pun. “Bird” was Parker’s established nickname by 1945 (shortened from “Yardbird”), while “Lore” simultaneously suggests traditional knowledge/mythology and directly alludes to ornithology – the scientific study of birds. The name thus wittily reinforces both Parker’s persona and the original programmatic joke behind the composition’s standard title.
