Angela Marie MacDougall introduces an unprecedented way of understanding gender based violence with a spectrum of eye-opening roots of the past, a hard-hitting understanding of the present, and energized ways to participate in the future. MacDougall ends with an inspiring call to action because once you know, you will want to act. MacDougall is an expert in social and cultural manifestations of relationship violence. With experience spanning 30 years, Angela has made ending gender violence her personal mission. Based in Vancouver, Canada she is Executive Director of Battered Women’s Support Services, where she oversees a matrix of services and dynamic team that support thousands of women, while working for cultural and systemic change which includes urging men to own their role. In recognition of this important work, Angela was named a Remarkable Woman by the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Magazine named her one of Vancouver’s most powerful people. Recognized as a “remarkable woman” in 2014 by the City of Vancouver, and with good reason, MacDougall is a board member of the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre and an executive director at Battered Women’s Support Services. The fierce feminist has spent the past 20-some years supporting women and girls who have experienced gender-based violence. Her collaborative efforts with a number of diverse alliances highlight the underlying issue of violence against women in various community events, including the Women’s Memorial March. Her work as an advocate, front-line worker, activist, and trainer has brought an authentic voice of change to service and program delivery and community development.
