Lymphoid malignancy and precision medicine | Professor Peter Johnson FMedSci

Professor Johnson researches lymphomas, a type of cancer that is one of the success stories of modern oncology. In this short expert lecture, he outlines the developments in diagnosis and treatment that have occurred over the last 30 years, and how our biological understanding of the science behind these cancers has developed. Over the last 30 years in the UK, the chances of dying from Hodgkin lymphoma have got four times lower, while non-Hodgkin lymphoma has simultaneously benefited from the introduction of monoclonal antibody treatment. Professor Johnson here explains the science behind the recent improvements in treatment in lymphoid malignancy, including some of the his work in international clinical trials for chemotherapy and radiotherapy using functional imaging to determine which patients need further treatment and who has already been cured. He goes on to discuss the future of treating lymphomas through genetic targeting and cancer genomics, as these cancers are heterogeneous, often behaving differently even if they look the same under the microscope and in terms of patient symptoms and presentation. Professor Peter Johnson FMedSci is Professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Southampton, talks about lymphoma research. He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in July 2014. We are the independent body in the UK representing the diversity of medical science. Our mission is to advance biomedical and health research and its translation into benefits for society.
