A Look Back At Old-Time Medicine Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Description: When we are ill, we go to a doctor for treatment. We have a certain amount of confidence and security when seeing a doctor because they have gone through years of medical school and are considered to be experts in their field. While medical malpractice is something that happens occasionally, it can be confidently stated that doctors nowadays pretty much know what they’re doing. It can be comforting to think about the destination, but it’s disturbing to think about the journey. Doctors were not always as competent as they are today, and medical practices have been fine-tuned due to trial and error. Back in medieval times, it was believed that blood was the cause of many diseases and illnesses, and one of the most popular health treatments was a practice called, “bloodletting” which involved cutting a vein or leeching an arm and letting their blood pour out into a bowl. Of course, today we know that blood is crucial to life, health, and survival. In this same time period when the bubonic plague was spreading, because it was believed it could be caught by smelly vapors, doctors were recommended to people that they use a “therapeutic stink” to combat the illness. This involved smell feces and farts (which they kept in jars). Drugs that we would consider to be highly illegal today were used as medical treatments up until the mid-twentieth century. Heroin was a popular treatment, with the term coined by Bayer, and used in cough syrup. Bayer marketed their heroin cough syrup as non-addictive. The product took off with such popularity (gee, we wonder why), that there were elixirs, tablets, and laced water put out on the market to meet demand. Speaking of ingredients that probably weren’t a good idea, radioactive water was believed to stimulate cells, prevent aging, and help cure common ailments. Today, we know better, but the water was sold and even used in chocolates, contraceptives, suppositories, and toothpaste. Finally, mercury was a common medication prescribed, despite the fact that numerous patients died from organ failure caused by mercury poisoning. Then we have old time medical treatments that just make us scratch our heads. Methods like the “whirling chair”, which involved spinning the patient until they passed out, was believed to help cure mental illnesses but repositioning and changing the pattern of the brain. Human organs were also used as medical treatments. Crushed skull was used as spot treatment for headaches and human fat was used as a remedy for muscle pain. Finally, we have the barbaric practice of the lobotomy. A man by the name of Walter Freeman developed the ice pick lobotomy as a treatment for mental illnesses, and the practice was forced upon numerous mental patients. While a few supposedly got better after the procedure, the majority of the victims were permanently changed and struggled to live and adapt to society after the surgery. Today, we can be glad that none of these medical practices are no longer conducted. But, we have to wonder, will people of the future be laughing at how we treated our medical ailments and call us barbaric one day? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: / therichest.org Twitter: / therichest_com Instagram: / therichest ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Featuring: MERCURY WHIRLING CHAIR RADIOACTIVE WATER CORPSE MEDICINE TREPANNING BLOODLETTING HEROIN LOBOTOMY ARSENIC STINK THERAPY ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.therichest.com/
