What Is Hormesis & How It Works? – Dr.Berg

Get access to my FREE resources 👉 https://drbrg.co/3VfFfSE Hormesis is an important concept for you to understand in the context of your health. Timestamps: 0:00 Hormesis is a condition that can really benefit you 0:45 Regular exercise over time is an example of hormesis 1:25 Phytonutrients in plants are another hormesis, along with others I explain In this video, I explain what hormesis is, and why it can benefit you. Hormesis is a condition where you’re adding some stress or toxicity in a small amount that’s beneficial to you, as compared to a large amount that would harm you. For example, when you add some exercise to your life, it will kick in repair enzymes that then make you stronger over time. But, if you’re in your fifties or sixties and out of shape, and you do Crossfit for two hours, that will have a toxic effect. Regular exercise over time allows you to build your antioxidant networks, become stronger, and avoid oxidative damage to your body. Fasting in a certain amount is also an example of beneficial hormesis. 16 to 18 hours of fasting prompts your body to get stronger, go into repair mode, and reduce oxidative stress. But if you fast too long, your body will start using up organs and muscles for fuel. Phytonutrients in plants, such as lectins and oxalates, are natural insecticides and pesticides. But if you consume them in a small amount, your body will resist them and you’ll become stronger. Heat and cold are still other examples of hormesis. A little bit of heat, such as in a sauna, is beneficial. Not so much if you were to sit in boiling water! Same with cold. Taking a cold shower is beneficial. Jumping into Lake Michigan in the middle of winter for a long time, not so much. Alcohol! I’m certainly not recommending it, yet research shows a small amount could benefit certain parts of your body. As well, consider ultraviolet (UV) light, or sunshine. A little bit is good for you, too much isn’t. A little bit of UV rays with their radiation will help you resist radiation. Basically, anything in large amounts can be harmful: estrogen, cortisol, growth hormone, thyroid hormone, insulin, and even certain nutrients such as synthetic vitamin A, selenium, zinc, or iron. Now you can see why hormesis is an important concept to understand. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, age 56, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting.
