In 1976, Citroën began a new chapter under the Peugeot umbrella. It left many wondering what defined a Citroën in this new era. The answer came in bold form at the 1982 Paris Auto Salon with the debut of the BX. The BX was infused with unmistakably Citroën DNA. Drawing inspiration from classics like the GS and CX, it combined their iconic character with clean, assertive lines. Inside, the BX offered a comfortable cabin with generous space for both passengers and luggage. Its striking design was the work of none other than Marcello Gandini, then with the famed Bertone design house. Great care was also taken beneath the surface. While parts sharing with Peugeot had become common, the BX proudly retained Citroën's hallmark hydropneumatic suspension. This innovative system replaces conventional coil springs and dampers with a combination of nitrogen gas and hydraulic fluid, allowing the ride height to be adjusted at will. The BX was offered with a variety of engine options, but the 19 TRS featured here stands out as a grand tourer-style model powered by a 1.9-liter gasoline engine. Although not especially powerful on paper, the engine was well matched to the car's relatively lightweight, aerodynamic body, making it an ideal companion for long-distance holiday drives. The BX proved to be a resounding success for Citroën, enjoying a strong 12-year production run. Mom than just a commercial triumph, it reaffirmed Citroën's place as a serious contender during a dynamic era of innovation in the French automotive world.
