The deadly COVID-19 Delta variant has mutated again to form Delta-plus or AY.1 variant. The delta plus variant formed due to the creation of the K417N mutation. This is a mutation in the spike protein of SARS-COV-2, which helps the virus enter and infect human cells. The Delta (B.1.617.2) variant with K417N mutation have been identified from the genomes from 10 countries. According to the latest report by the Public Health England, the Delta plus variant was identified in six genomes from India as of June 7. The Maharashtra government has sent a large number of samples from various districts for genome sequencing. They have done this to verify whether the SARS-CoV-2 has undergone any mutations. Delta plus is resistant to the monoclonal antibody cocktail (Casirivimab and Imdevimab) treatment. This treatment for Covid-19 was recently approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). The severity and transmissibility of the delta plus variant is not yet known.
