This is a practice piece that focuses on underpainting shadows for a watercolour painting. In this approach, the shadows go in first. In this case, I painted them in blue. The final piece did not fully come together, but I am sharing it because this is a strong technique and well worth practising. Layering paint over an established shadow structure can lead to unexpected and often useful results, and you only really understand it by trying it yourself. I learn largely through trial and error. As a self-taught painter, I relied on watching others to understand technique, but it was my own experiences with the paint that taught me the most. The subject here is clementines and lemons in a glass bowl.
