A dramatic avalanche of rocks has just broken away from one of Merapi Volcano’s viscous lava domes, sending blocks tumbling down the upper slopes. Merapi’s summit isn’t a single solid cone—it's built from steep, constantly-changing lava domes made of thick, sticky magma. These domes are naturally unstable, riddled with fractures, and prone to collapsing without much warning. Indonesia’s monitoring agency, BPPTKG, keeps Merapi at Alert Level III (Siaga) because ongoing dome growth, hot rockfalls, and small collapses can quickly escalate into larger events. During the rainy season the risk increases even more as water weakens the already-fragile dome surface. This video captures one of those collapse events as it happens—an avalanche of debris triggered by gravity, internal fractures, and the constant reshaping of the dome. While smaller than a full pyroclastic flow, these rockfalls are a reminder of how dynamic and hazardous Merapi’s summit remains every day.
