CROP Organization's team of proximate leaders, Ken Oliver (Director of Business Development), Jason Bryant (Director of Restorative Programs), and Richard Mireles (Director of Communications), had the privilege of having a conversation with Brant Choate who is the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's (CDCR) Director of the Division Rehabilitative Programs (DRP). The three of us were sentenced to over 100 years to life and served over 64 years combined. Our daily commitment on the inside to earn our freedom created opportunities to have these types of conversations with Brant about transforming the system in a meaningful way. As Jason shares, "The investments we make in the present purchase our futures tomorrow." Our conversation was largely about making personal decisions and coming to the realization that in order to survive prison in a meaningful way, one has to think outside of the prison walls and toward a future worth having. Ken shares insight into the typical low expectations in prison and our desire at CROP Organization to raise expectations and inspire others to think bigger and know that so much more is possible for one's life. In today's system, it's largely possible for an incarcerated person to work themselves out of prison when they get committed to making every single day count. We discuss the ability to determine our attitudes and futures no matter what our circumstances are. We shared about the incarcerated person's ability to take control of their own lives and experience internal freedom on the inside. As Richard shares, "I had to get free on the inside before I could be free on the outside." Brant is a progressive thinker who is interested in learning how the incarcerated can transform their lives on the inside in spite of the challenges and barriers. He encourages educational and vocational training and is a major part of the decision making process to provide the resources needed to equip the incarcerated with a freedom that never leads to recidivism.
