Interview with Greg Valentine, SVP of Solutions Engineering at Industrial Defender on Implementing INSM Greg Valentine explains Internal Network Security Monitoring (INSM) as the practice of monitoring and analyzing traffic within trusted zones, such as ESPs, to detect and address potential cyber threats. This approach is especially critical in light of the NERC CIP-015 standard, which mandates internal monitoring to protect critical infrastructure against evolving threats. Since 2006, Industrial Defender has been helping critical infrastructure operators gain a deep understanding of their OT environments through comprehensive data collection. A key part of this is the Industrial Defender Data Collector (IDC), an industry-proven OT sensor designed to meet INSM needs. The IDC monitors network activity, devices, and communications, and is equipped with intrusion detection capabilities to identify anomalous network behavior. It alerts operators to deviations in baseline traffic and unusual packet information, with risk-based event prioritization. The IDC also simplifies the process of complying with NERC CIP-015 by providing evidence of internal monitoring and retaining historical INSM data, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for protecting and retaining network data.
