On this episode of @darshantalks, we had discussed #Publications with guest #JananSarwar. Janan Sarwar, Medical Program Manager at Knowfully Learning Group (https://www.knowfully.com/) and Publishing Professional, spoke to us about the pandemic's impact on physical publishing and print media. The trend of buying physical textbooks is declining because of their high costs and the fact that you can get free online. Example: Back in pharmacy school, she would pool her money with her roommates to buy one textbook. She had mentioned that she worked with people at APHA to create a digital program with modules divided into specific subjects that students want to explore. Example: Instead of looking through many textbooks to learn about biostatistics, she had worked with graphic designers to curate a more engaging curriculum. The problem with this is that it is much harder to update, insert or delete things with these multiple formats of audio, video etc. Splicing up some parts of the video may not be feasible, leading to the company having to start from scratch. It also boils down to the Return on Investment, i.e. whether the digital platform pulls in more users or would they rather go back to the written materials after trying it. Audio networks like Clubhouse can be used for scientific discussions and, for example, interactions with the publisher of a book on infectious diseases. She also highlighted the aspect of micro-learning for tutoring children in this generation. A hybrid model is necessary today, even if the content is the same across multiple formats. This style correlates with adaptive learning and Bloom's Taxonomy. Everyone learns through a mix of reading and visualising, so it is hard to pinpoint one exclusive method that works for each person. She had concluded with an exciting point: Reading doesn't have to be academic or fictional; there is a wide variety out there ranging from productivity to lifestyle books.
