Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is one of the most iconic and influential video game series ever made, developed primarily by Rockstar North (formerly DMA Design) and published by Rockstar Games. It started back in 1997 as a top-down, open-world crime game where you basically stole cars, caused chaos, and completed missions for criminal bosses. What began as a controversial, satirical take on crime and American culture has evolved into a blockbuster franchise that’s sold nearly 450 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling video game series of all time. Core Gameplay and Appeal The series is famous for its massive open worlds modeled after real U.S. cities (like Liberty City = New York, San Andreas = California/Nevada, Vice City = Miami). You play as criminals rising through the underworld, with freedom to drive/fly any vehicle, shoot, explore, and ignore the main story if you want — it’s sandbox chaos at its finest. Later games added deep stories, memorable characters, radio stations with licensed music, and sharp satire on politics, media, and society. It’s always been controversial for violence, sex, drugs, and profanity, but that’s part of what makes it stand out. Main Games in the Series (Chronological Release Order, Focusing on Core Titles) • Grand Theft Auto (1997) and GTA 2 (1999): The 2D era — top-down view, simple but revolutionary open-world crime. • Grand Theft Auto III (2001): The big breakthrough — first full 3D game, set the template for everything after. • Vice City (2002): 1980s Miami vibe, Tommy Vercetti, amazing soundtrack (think Scarface meets Miami Vice). • San Andreas (2004): Often called the peak by fans — huge map, CJ as protagonist, RPG elements like gym workouts, gang wars, and flying planes. • Grand Theft Auto IV (2008): Darker, more realistic story with Niko Bellic in Liberty City; groundbreaking physics and multiplayer. • Grand Theft Auto V (2013): The juggernaut — three protagonists (Michael, Franklin, Trevor), heists, massive map, and GTA Online (which is still hugely popular in 2026 with constant updates). It’s sold over 200 million copies alone. There are also spin-offs like Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, Chinatown Wars, and expansions like London 1969. Current Status (as of January 2026) Grand Theft Auto V is still going strong over 12 years later, especially GTA Online. But the real hype is Grand Theft Auto VI, which is finally set to release on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (PC likely in 2027 or later, as usual). From the trailers: • It’s set in a modern-day Vice City and the state of Leonida (Florida parody). • Dual protagonists: Lucia (the series’ first female lead) and her partner Jason, inspired by Bonnie and Clyde. • Expected to have the biggest, most detailed open world yet — insane social media parodies, wildlife, crowds, and chaos. • Rockstar has delayed it a couple times (originally aiming for 2025) to polish it perfectly, and as of now, it’s on track with no further delays reported. The first trailer broke YouTube records, and the second one ramped up the excitement even more. It’s poised to be the biggest entertainment launch ever when it drops. If you’re new, start with GTA V — it’s incredible and holds up perfectly. If you’ve played everything, we’re all just counting down the days to GTA VI. What’s your favorite in the series?
