But does that mean it’s 90% better? CCJ Chief Editor Jason Cannon finds out in this video, taking the all-new Volvo VNL on a 90-mile test drive from Mountville, South Carolina, to Charlotte, North Carolina. With a trailer loaded to around 70,000 pounds, Jason tests the truck’s performance, fuel efficiency, and safety features, while sharing his impressions during and after the drive. The new VNL delivers up to 10% better fuel economy compared to the previous generation, thanks to improvements in the engine and aerodynamics. Additionally, the truck comes with semi-autonomous driving features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, I-See, and Eco-Roll, which anticipate traffic and terrain to automatically boost miles per gallon. Jason tests these features along with safety systems such as Volvo Dynamic Steering with Lane Keeping Assist to see just how fuel-efficient and safe this truck actually is. One of the features that sets the all-new VNL apart from its predecessor is the new camera mirror system. The truck still comes with traditional mirrors due to federal law, but fleets now have the option to add these digital mirrors. On his drive, Jason uses both systems to find out how well they complement each other and whether one is better than the other. While driving the all-new VNL at highway speeds, Jason noticed how quiet the cab was. There was very little noise or vibration, even during acceleration. Volvo Product Marketing Manager Duane Tegels explained that a big part of the quiet ride comes from the powertrain, which delivers peak horsepower at lower RPMs than usual. By the end of the drive, Jason said this is the quietest conventional tractor he’s driven in a long time. By the end of the 90-mile journey, Jason reveals the final fuel mileage for the trip and gives his verdict. Is the all-new VNL 90% better than the previous generation? Watch this video to find out.
