Does A Tree Have A Spirit ? Along my way of practicing shamanism understanding nature and being aligned with her teaches many things , please hit subscribe and the bell as you may find the following information useful and theres lots more to follow. Sounds interesting when I ask this question as my relationship with trees has been from early memories as a child , I was very much drawn to elder making bows and arrows from the saplings. I didn’t understand or had any teachings about trees how they can give us a strength of being as well as a comfort . I certainly didn’t know I could be asking permission of the tree to cut off some saplings to allow me to create my own world of being an indian. The energy’s of this tree in some ancient European teachings are calling her the “ Elder Mother “ again this intrigues me now as I talk about this being drawn to a mother tree energy. In Britain many wise people would tip there hats to the Edler showing respect for her , of course this is all myth and legend but isnt it ? Some North American tribes beleive that the Edler is the mother of the human race. I am always curious about all this teachings from ancient generations as there is something powerful about them even though there may have been distortions of the story along the way. There are also the pagan witch elder a certain tree that they would pay homage too and of course main stream religions banned any form of these practices and so they sort of died out. I often wonder what the religions were frightened of ? In ancient Britain the elder mother within the tree was said to offer a lot of cures for all mankind . Meaning that the Elder has a lot of healing benefits that come from its roots, leaves, bark, fruit and spirit ( energy ) . The following information is too get you curious but do your own research as with all medicinal properties we need to understand the ins and outs if you are not sure go to a specialist herbalist. the Elder bark is a diuretic and is a strong purgative meaning it makes you vomit quickly which is handy if something has been ingested that needs evacuating such as food poisoning. The young shoots of the Elder which can be boiled like aspargus clear the lungs and head of phlegm . The pith of the shoots contain a mild sleep inducing drug , how fascinating is this when you get into the plants energy . The leaves of the Edler are used both fresh and of course dried to be used in the winter months. The properties can help with inflammation of the eyes and if sniffed help with a stuffy nose. The leaves as said earlier can cause vomiting and they are a diuretic and expectorant if taken internally so great caution needs to be taken. They also can be used as a poultice for inflation on the body . The flower’s are usually picked when fully open they then can be dried and interestingly pickled or salted for storage and then used as a health supplement by frying in batter or just added to food. The flowers can used for many ailments and I would strongly suggest to do your own research as they were used years ago for ailments such as bronchial catarrh , bronchitis many eruptive fevers like scarlet fever or measles. Also rheumatism and gout . Infusions were used for inhaling to ease colds and gargle with to soothe throats , but be aware they also were used as a mild laxative. . The flowers have many medicinal uses and if you are drawn to them please do your own research The berries, these have many of the properties of the flowers one of the things they were used for was for a remedy for colic and diarrhoea the dried berries are made into teas. We all know that the berries can be made into a wine , in days gone by the wine was administered hot to relieve chills flu and asthma,. They used to simmer the juice with sugar and make what they called Rob and used for colds coughs and flu . This way of making a syrup gave it a long shelf life 2kg of berries ripe ones crush and extract the juice , simmer with 450 gms of sugar or more if needed to make a consistency like honey , cool it and bottle . So there you go the common elder that many regard as a nuisance as it can be invasive and grows anywhere.
