This process involves producing two entirely different injection molded parts, inspecting them, and then assembling the two parts together before packaging. This once labor-intensive and time-consuming process has now been optimized and improved by leveraging automated technology. First, each part is produced in separate injection molds where we are able to leverage end of arm tooling to separate and discard the runner. Each half of the final part is then dropped into a hopper which rotates and ultimately orients the part correctly allowing it to be properly assembled later in the process. Prior to assembly, however, each part is individually inspected by a high-resolution camera which takes a photo of each part and can instantly decide if it is a good or bad part as determined by the quality inspection requirements. If the part is deemed good, it will continue down the line or if it is rejected it will automatically be removed from the automated work cell. Now that both halves have been injection molded, correctly oriented, and inspected by our quality systems, the two halves of this automated work cell align and assemble both halves. Once press-fit together, the assembled part then continues through the cell and is inspected one final time before being ejected from the cell and placed into a box where it is now ready for packaging. This is a prime example of how we have taken a once labor-intensive process and contained costs while also increasing throughput by leveraging the use of automated technology.
