The highly anticipated SurfSkate film that shows how one rider from Ottawa is pushing the boundaries of surfskating through his unconventional approach to the sport. Surfing and Skateboarding are two sports that started from the same desire for freedom, chasing rushes, and feeling alive... Skateboarding was originally a way for surfers to get that same rush as riding a wave, but the sport evolved to become so much more, ultimately becoming its own thing and surpassing surfing for popularity because of its accessibility. Recently, technological advancements have produced the SurfSkate truck, which adds an additional pivot point to make boards ride the way a surfboard carves. The result is a type of board that returns us to the roots of skateboarding, riding on dry land in a way that simulates the motions, movements, and feeling of carving across the face of a wave. But to me... I didn't see the need to go completely back to that 70's style. I love carving on my surfskate, but I also love doing skateboard tricks like grinding rails, gapping down stair cases, flip tricks etc. Why couldn't I take my SurfSkate and carve it like a surfboard while also integrating in the skateboard manoeuvres I love into my carving? So I did. The response was mostly positive but I got a lot of comments on how my way of doing things was not proper or conventional. I wasn't doing my turns with proper surfing technique. I wasn't doing my kickflips with proper skateboard technique. I was wearing too much protective gear. I wasn't wearing enough protective gear... Eventually I just tuned it out and decided I would embrace being Unconventional. I went looking for opportunities to be deliberately contrarian with my riding. It added new challenges and new style to old tricks. I realized that the modern SurfSkate is the all terrain vehicle that can do it all if you use your imagination and allow yourself to think outside the box. So I went exploring every nook and cranny of my hometown of Ottawa, and I surfskated everything I could find. Whether you are a SurfSkater, a Skateboarder, a Surfer, or none of the above, I think you will enjoy watching my quest. I found way more than I ever expected.
