These are a couple of successful Paiute deadfall traps that I made. I used wild dogbane for the trigger cordage. This is the fastest primitive deadfall trigger that I’ve used. I have had some nuisance mice & squirrel damaging my home so my intentions were targeted towards them. In 14 hours I unexpectedly & unintentionally got a small wren bird in one of my traps, as it must have been after the ants that found there way onto the bait stick. Since this common species of bird here is as small as a mouse, there wasn’t much that I could use it for, so I decided to use it for bait with hopes of getting one of the nuisance squirrel. I tied the bird onto the bait stick with wild dogbane cordage as well. I have ground squirrel digging underneath the foundation of my home & a tree squirrel chewing on the logs of my home, as well as pulling off my gutter downspouts. I was expecting to find a possible chipmunk however, in less than 24 hours I ended up solving the log chewing & downspout issues. I saved the squirrel pelt as I always do, & had a delicious fire cooked lunch. Crispy on the outside & juicy on the inside. It’s amazing how well you can cook using a flat rock & hot coals. In a survival situation, many would have eaten the tiny bird, but unless it was a larger bird, I would choose to try & turn it into a more substantial meal, as I did here. Unless you are on your own private property or in a survival situation, you should not use deadfall traps, as they are often illegal. It is legal here anytime of year to protect your home & livelihood from nuisance animals causing damage to your property. However, if I’m ever in a survival situation, this clearly would be one of my go to traps to use. These traps hunt for you while you can be doing other important things elsewhere. It’s important to always check your traps at least once or twice a day. If you are unable to do that, you should disarm them.
