Oliver Gerrish explores and background and life of Edith May Pretty (nee Dempster), who found the Sutton Hoo treasure in 1939. She consequently presented it to the Nation - the largest ever gift during the donor's lifetime. 'The Dig' comes out on Netflix tomorrow. The film is quite loosely-based on the real story of Edith, Basil Brown and the treasure. As ever, the reality is often more theatrical than the fiction - so here it is.
