Strong cyclone on the cards for Mauritius and Réunion

A potent tropical cyclone is developing, and reached tropical storm status earlier on Friday. Rapid intensification is expected to begin soon, and the storm is likely to reach Category 2 status on the Saffir Simpson scale on Sunday, and then on to the Mascarene Islands on Monday as a Category 3 storm. The forecast still has uncertainties, and the latest model runs take the storm through the islands much more slowly, which would result with much higher rainfall along with prolonged severe winds which at times could exceed 100mph (160kph). Rainfall is expected to reach 400mm over the islands, but higher totals are possible. Elsewhere, three areas of interest around the coast of Australia could develop, with the westernmost system given the highest chances. A new tropical storm could form in the next few days in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, to the southwest of Darwin, and is likely to stall for a time before moving towards the southwest.
