There's a proudly cherished speciality of German cuisine: Currywurst! It's a special type of sausage served with a very special sauce. Every city or region in Germany has its very own way to prepare the sausage, and there are many different recipes for the sauce, often kept as a secret. In South Surrey, BC, we visited Ilona Yue, who offers there in a small Teepee the - probably - only Berlin-style Currywurst of all Canada. Each Saturday until 2pm, true fans of her speciality come by to eat one of her sausages (or two). They assert that Ilona's Currywurst is the best you can find outside of Berlin. You can find her Currywurst at 3418 King George Hwy, Surrey, BC V4P 1A8, in the Teepee of the Holy Smoke Coffee Company. Ilona tells us the story of the Currywurst, about the "fight" between Berlin and Hamburg which both claim to be the place of origin for this German delicacy. Berlin claims that a woman called Herta Heuwer sold the very first Currywurst in 1949, whereas Hamburg says the first Currywurst has been sold already in 1947 at the market in Hamburg. The question who invented the Currywurst first, will probably never be solved. However, the German Currywurst Museum has been opened in 2009 in Berlin. Have you ever tried Currywurst? Did you like it? Was it in Berlin or in Hamburg? What is in your opinion the birthplace of the Currywurst? Let us know! Enjoy!
