Brassica are plants in the mustard family including broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, turnips and turnip greens, collards, kale and Asian greens like bok choy. Put simply, it’s the family of cabbages. So how do you grow brassicas in your backyard veggie patch? In this episode of Green Space, Fabian Capomolla from The Hungry Gardener shows us how to grow brassica, as well as his top tips on growing brassicas in your winter vegetable garden. Wondering why you should plant brassicas in your winter veggie garden? Fabian says “the beauty of brassicas is that they’re cold and frost-hardy, making them natural winter crops. They’re also delicious in wintry meals—more so when freshly picked from your own garden.” With many varieties of brassica within the species, the options for home cooking with the freshest of vegetables. Plus, there are many health benefits from common brassica like cabbage and broccoli and those that are less well known types like rapini, or broccoli rabe, which is nutrient-rich green. When it comes to growing brassica, Fabian suggests planting in time for the cooler weather as they can be harvested over winter. His top growing tip? Invest in a quality fertiliser or plant where green beans (that naturally enrich the soil) were growing in summer, as brassica are heavy feeders. It’s also important to plant the brassica seedlings with enough space to allow the plants to reach their full potential. But, there are a few challenges to be aware of when growing brassica. The main one? Pests. Brassicas are well-loved by the white cabbage moth and they also attract slugs, aphids and snails. Fabian says “you’ll have to plan your defense against these little guys.
