Mením atîm Andy. Kalaysîñ? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Dobrujan Tatar language. Dobrujan Tatar — the language Dobrujan Tatar, also called Romanian Tatar, is a Turkic language of the Kipchak–Nogai branch spoken by the Tatar communities of the Dobruja region in Romania and Bulgaria. Linguists describe it as historically consisting of at least two main varieties, often referred to as a “Şól” (or Crimean-related) variety spoken by the majority of Tatars in Romania and a “Nogay” variety spoken by a smaller portion of the community. The language has been influenced over time by both Romanian and Turkish due to long, close contact. A standardized Latin alphabet was introduced in the mid-20th century, and the language was at one time taught at university level in Romania, though institutional support later declined. Today the language faces challenges such as declining intergenerational transmission and a shift toward dominant regional languages, especially among younger speakers, although some community efforts continue to promote literacy and cultural use. Dobrujan Tatars — the people and their culture Dobrujan Tatars are a Turkic Muslim minority whose ancestors include Crimean Tatars and Nogai Tatars who settled in the Dobruja region in several historical waves, especially during and after the late 18th century. Over centuries they formed established communities in towns and villages across Dobruja, contributing to the region’s multicultural character. Their culture traditionally centers on Sunni Islam, strong family and communal bonds, oral traditions, music, and cuisine, along with the use of the Tatar language in daily and ceremonial life. In the modern era, the community maintains cultural and religious institutions and organizations aimed at supporting Tatar heritage, though social changes, migration, assimilation pressures, and language shift have made cultural preservation more difficult. Despite these challenges, the Dobrujan Tatars continue to maintain a distinct identity within the broader cultural landscape of the region. Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages.
