A dream cruise to Madagascar aboard MSC Melody! Madagascar is a beautiful island country off the south-eastern coast of Africa more than 1200 nautical miles from Durban by sea. We were excited to visit Madagascar, as there are many different things to see and do. The Durban Beachfront is a popular tourist destination in South Africa, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant atmosphere.: The Durban Beachfront promenade is a popular place for joggers, cyclists, and walkers sretching for several kilometres and offers stunning views of the ocean. It boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa, including the Golden Mile, which is a stretch of beach that runs along the Indian Ocean and are perfect for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing. The Durban car terminal opened in 1998 with a capacity of shipping more than 60,000 vehicles per year. Durban with a population of more than 3,5 million, is the third most populous city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Cape Town. There are more than 300km of railway lines within the confines of the harbour with 58 berths and more than 20 terminal operators. Archaeological evidence suggests that hunting communities have occupied the area since 100,000 BC. The country is known for its unique wildlife, including chameleons, lemurs, and other primates, as well as its beautiful beaches and natural scenery including a visit to a National Park and visits to the local villages to share in their culture. The Durban harbour is the biggest port in Sub Saharan Africa, handling more than 31 million tons of cargo each year. It is the fourth biggest container port in the Southern Hemisphere after Jakarta, Indonesia and Santos in Brazil. The Durban Cruise Terminal is under construction at a cost of R215 million rand and on completion will be able to handle two large cruise ships at a time. It has for years already accommodated some of the largest passenger ships in the world including the RMS Queen Mary. The vessel, although a little old fashioned, was comfortable and a great time was had by all during our cruise to Madagascar. MSC Melody was a cruise ship with quiet a diverse history, having been owned since its launch on 9th January 1981 by no fewer than 9 companies including MSC from 1997 t0 2013 until its demise in 2019 She could carry more than 1000 passengers in 532 cabins with a staff compliment of 535. In no time at all we were into a holiday spirit enjoying all the amenities and facilities onboard this beautiful ship as we headed out to sea to begin our exciting cruise to Madagascar. On the 25th April 2009 while sailing between Durban and Genoa, MSC Melody was attacked by a group of Somali Pirates when around 300km of the Seychelles. Passengers fought them off by throwing tables and chairs at the pirates until the ship security was summoned to deal with the situation.
