Once a year, master potters, artisans and students descend upon Sturt in the New South Wales southern highlands to fire up the anagama, a Japanese style kiln. The tightly-stacked ceramic wares are distributed throughout the five-metre-long climbing kiln, to direct the naked flames, which are generated from three tonnes of donated local wood. Firing takes place under 24-hour surveillance — over five days and nights —after which each item removed has a unique design, because of how it was packed in the kiln.
