The Acrocorinth fortress is located a little south of the city of Ancient Corinth .It is built on the steep rock Acrocorinth at an altitude of 575 meters. It was fortified by the tyrant of Corinth Kypselus and his son Periandros between the 7th and 6th century BC. During the 4th century BC, Macedonians restored and strengthened the walls. It was destroyed by the Roman General Leukius Momius in 146 BC. Julius Caesar restores the castle in 44 BC.One more restoration is done in the 6th century AD. by Justinian. In 1210 the castle is conquered by the Franks. In 1687 the castle is occupied by the Venetians who restored it and gave it its current shape. A few years later, in 1715 ,the Turks laid siege to the Acrocorinth and conquered it.The castle remained under their occupation until 1821 when it passes into the Greek warriors until July in 1822 when it is reconquered by Dramalis. At the beginning of 1823 it is besieged for the third time by the Greek Revolutionaries.Α Turk Official of Acrocorinth Halil-Agas suggested surrendering the castle. The Convention of Surrendering the castle was signed on the 19th of October 1823, but the Turk -Albanians left the castle in the hands of Theodoros Kolokotronis.
