In this TEDx Talk Darshak Hathi shares how youth leadership can lead to community participation in solving the most urgent problems of the day. In their case over 14 rivers have been revived by local communities at a small fraction of the original costs. And the best part is the community did not have to wait for the government to act. Darshak Hathi is a social activist leader whose mission is to reform India into a Socio-Culturally evolved, economically self reliant nation. An entreprenuer with a flourishing IT business, Darshak Hathi gave up his business to join the Art of Living Foundation and served as an International Director since 2001. Darshak has since addressed the UN International Forum and has trained over 100,000 youth leaders to become change agents and leaders in their communities. In 2012, there was a drought situation in Marathawada in the state of Maharashtra leading to farmer suicides. To tackle this, Darshak initiated Jal Jagruti Abhiyan, a drive to revive the water bodies in the region through community participation. This work was done across 10 districts of Maharashtra. As a result of which, six rivers have been rejuvenated. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
