On 17 July, Orrin Devinsky presented a webinar on cannabis-based treatments for epilepsy. You can watch the full seminar above. Here’s how Devinsky describes what he talked about in this webinar: There is solid scientific support for the idea that cannabidiol (CBD), the major non-psychoactive compound in cannabis, is effective in treating several rare forms of epilepsy. Three large randomized controlled trials have established that this compound reduces the frequency of seizures in Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. As a result, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last month approved Epidiolex, a 99-percent-pure CBD medication, to treat these rare syndromes. However, it isn’t clear whether CBD works for other forms of epilepsy. One study found no benefit in individuals with treatment-resistant focal epilepsy, one of the most common forms of severe epilepsy. It also is not known whether other cannabinoids or cannabis-derived compounds might also be useful for easing some forms of epilepsy or conditions such as anxiety and depression that are often associated with epilepsy. We also need to determine the safety profile of various cannabinoids on the developing brain. I will review these and other topics in this webinar.
