Old Man's Cave State Route 664, Logan OH 43138 GPS Tracking: (39.437176, -82.539667) This hike is Old Man’s Cave in southeastern Ohio’s Hocking Hills. Old Man’s Cave is one of the 7 major hiking trails of Hocking Hills State Park in southern Ohio. It is just outside South Bloomingville and the home of the beloved Grandma Faye's grocery and souvenir shop, and about a half hour from Logan just off State Route 664. Old Man's Cave Trailhead starts on the far side of the parking lot from the Visitor Center. You can find the trailhead by looking for the large kiosk along the sidewalk. This hike through Old Man’s Cave is 1 mile and takes about an hour to hike. It is one way, beginning at a kiosk at the parking. Hikers follow the trail along a boardwalk, down a stone staircase to Upper Falls, then through the gorge, passing Devil’s Bathtub and a stone tunnel. Before hiking up to Old Man’s Cave, Sphinx Head can be seen on the left. After hiking through Old Man’s Cave, visitors exit via a stone staircase, past the old naturalist cabin, and then past the park visitor center. A sidewalk leads hikers back to the parking area. The one-way loop trail is about a mile long, takes about an hour to hike, and begins at the kiosk at Upper Falls. And yes, you will see a lot of people going off-trail. Please don't. It isn't just that you can be fined for doing so, but it hurts the wildlife living within. The area has a couple of endangered species and is protected. The park is open from dawn to dusk and hikers must stay on the trail. Oh, and for almost 150 years, legends have been told that the large recess cave in the gorge was named Old Man’s Cave for a trapper by the name of Retzler who lived and died there and was buried in the cave with his white wolfhound. For years, before locals reburied his body in a more secluded spot away from prying eyes, people would come to the cave to visit the bones, and it was called Dead Man’s Cave. Some even passed along that long after the man and dog died, the ghost of the baying hound haunted the gorge area.
