Continuing my journey towards West Africa, I leave the largest city in the disputed Western Sahara behind, and travel 535 kilometers overland from Laayoune to the tropical beachside city of Dakhla, considered to be the tourism heart of Southern Morocco. Despite the relatively short distance, the journey south would take a full 10 hours due to the multiple police checkpoints and heightened security in this contested region. Despite the ongoing conflict, I found travelling in the region to be safe and peaceful, thanks to the strong security put in place by the Kingdom of Morocco, and the many United Nations peacekeepers who are entrusted to keep the peace in this region of Africa that has been claimed by both Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) for the past 50 years. Along the way, I enjoyed views of the endless dunes of the Sahara Desert, with the first portion of the drive passing through the interior, then later, hugging the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean as we made our way south to Dakhla, the windsurfing capital of the world. Arriving in Dakhla, I enjoyed a walk along some of the city's impressive murals, then headed to a hotel for the night (actually two, as the first one was my first encounter with bedbugs on all my travels through 137 countries so far - yuck!). This journey isn't for everyone, and you'll need a good dose of courage and patience as you wrestle with the political uncertainty and the endless police checkpoints. If you do decide to travel overland in this region, make sure you have plenty of copies of your passport (fiche) on hand for the authorities, and don't discuss politics or the contentious nature of Western Sahara whatsoever. The question of sovereignty over Western Sahara is an important one, at the nationalist heart of all Moroccans, so best to be safe and avoid any debate while travelling here. 00:00 Intro 00:22 Title Montage 1:01 Morning in Laayoune 02:30 Crossing Western Sahara 08:33 Approaching Dakhla 09:11 Dakhla Arrival & Murals 10:14 Petit Taxi to Centre-Ville 10:47 Bedbugs 11:02 Review: Karam City Hotel 11:32 Outro Episode 212 | #Africa #NorthAfrica #Morocco #WesternSahara | #Laâyoune #Laayoune #Dakhla | Filmed March 2024 SUBSCRIBE to my YouTube Channel to stay up to date with my travels (click the bell for notifications!) and be sure to hit that LIKE button if you enjoyed this video!
