Introduction to Hongdo Island

Hongdo Island is an island in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. The area is 6.47km2, the length of the coastline is 8km, the length of the north and south is 6.7km, the length of the east and west is 2.4km, and the population is 710 as of 2001. It is located 115km southwest of Mokpo-si, and consists of the main island and 13 affiliated islands. The entire island was designated Natural Monument No. 170 in 1965. The components of the bedrock that forms the island are composed of red quartzite and quartzite sandstone, and stratification and joints (a gap horizontally or vertically in the rock) are well developed, creating a superb view. In 1981, it became part of the Dadohae Sea National Park.
