Innocent Bystander (1949) was written by Craig Rice, the first mystery author to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine. Rice's books were popular for their alcohol-soaked protagonists who bumbled through screwball murder mysteries, though some novels were more contemplative and less boozy (Innocent Bystander being one of them). Rice's life was sadly less comedic than her books. In this video I'll be talking about the book, reading an excerpt, and discussing Rice's challenging life.
