"Hard Times Wrestling" was created in 1987, and was the satire brainchild of Writer/Actor Patrick Halley. He was also a cab driver from Detroit, and a cousin of Len Puch, Singer/Guitarist for his band, Snake Out. Len Puch wrote the tune "Feedback," the theme for the BanDin series. You can see Len in the audience, wearing a coon-skin cap, and "interfering in the match" during the credits (along with singer Elvis Hitler, delivering an upper-arm smash). In November and December, 1987, Patrick Halley and Jerry Kruse wrote and staged the Playlet you see here for the Trumbull Avenue Playhouse in Detroit, a venue for alternative performances of all kinds. "Hard Times Wrestling" features the match "Dead Man" vs. "Happy Bob," the Funeral Director, along with their Managers. A genial Host, "Gentleman John" (Co-Writer and Lighting Director Jerry Kruse) interviews everyone and calls the action in the ring. The "Dead Man" character is performed by Patrick Halley. This was a few years before the official Pro Wrestling shows had wrestling corpses for entertainment. And now "Hard Times Wrestling" is a big shout to the "Living/Walking Dead" shows on TV. The wrestling match was recorded for use in BanDin Detroit, a Cable-TV series. Since the BanDin Detroit series was designed to be a live-music show, with bands recorded in clubs, we did not use this wrestling recording for more than a year. Finally Co-Producer/Hand-Held-Cameraman Bryan Fox and I drop-kicked "Hard Times Wrestling" into episode #17, shown in April, 1989. The sound was recorded in Binaural Stereo, as were almost all the episodes of BanDin Detroit. So wear earbuds or headphones for live, 3-D sound, and you are with us at the event. BanDin Detroit was shown throughout Wayne and Oakland Counties in Michigan. This episode was Directed, Photographed, Produced & Edited by Bryan Fox and George Lees. BanDin Detroit was created by myself, George Lees. This factual work is available on YouTube for educational purposes.
