The Warhorse in Early Modern and Modern Europe

In this seminar, we take a journey from Italy of the late fifteenth century to the British Empire just prior to the First World War, stopping by in pre-Napoleonic Switzerland. Our speakers are: Pierre-Henry Bas, who looks at horseback fighting in Pietro del Monte's treatise Collectanea; Lucy Betteridge, whose research explores the learning curve the cavalry of the British Empire experienced between the Boer War and the First World War; and Jurg Gassmann, whose most recent study focusses on the reasons for which Switzerland was never able to have good cavalry. The seminar is organised by Cheiron: The International Journal for Equine and Equestrian History, as part of a series looking into the history of horse training and management.
