BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. It's the practice of employees using their personal devices, like smartphones, laptops, or tablets, to access company resources or perform work-related tests. Now that remote work is so popular, many companies are creating BYOD policies, giving their employees the freedom to choose how they work and which devices they use. Companies with successful BYOD programs say it increases their employees' satisfaction and productivity because people tend to work more efficiently on devices they're comfortable with. BYOD can also be a great way to cut down on IT spending since the employees have to furnish their own devices. For the employee, BYOD's convenience can't be beat. A worker can easily navigate from a corporate Zoom meeting to adding a kid's soccer game to their Google calendar all on the same device. BYOD also gives employees the freedom to modify and customize their devices for their personal preferences instead of having to learn to deal with the corporate device's default settings. Clearly, BYOD can have great benefits for both employees and businesses, but it also poses security risks that can lead to potential data breaches and may add work to your IT team's plate. Onboarding personal devices can be a lot more time-consuming than the same tasks on company owned devices. IT has to work with whatever device an employee brings to them, even if the rest of their software isn't designed for that device. A fully Microsoft company, for example, might suddenly have to learn how to onboard and manage Apple devices if they allow BYOD, and there's no guarantee your current tech stack can support different operating systems. BYOD can also pose a security threat. People download all kinds of data on their personal devices, and those random downloads make them less secure than company owned devices. That means there's a bit of extra risk whenever you allow employees to access company resources from their personal phones or computers. And if an employee loses their personal device, sensitive company information can easily get leaked. Despite the risks, BYOD is here to stay. To manage it effectively, your IT team needs to make a policy that explains the requirements a personal device has to meet before it can access company information. To do that, you need effective MDM software that balances identity and access management with keeping employee access seamless. The JumpCloud Directory Platform is an OS-agnostic IT management platform that admins can leverage to address BYOD risks. In addition to files, networks, and servers, IT teams can also control all employee devices and manage access privileges based on user groups all from a single console.
