Self-Directed Language Learning (SDLL) is not self-study, and it is not learners working in isolation. In this video, I explain how SDLL builds learner autonomy in TESOL classrooms through staged choice, peer teaching, and negotiated syllabus design. If we want students who can operate independently beyond our classrooms, we have to design courses that gradually withdraw teacher control. In this episode of TESOL Methods Explained, I break down: • What SDLL actually is • Why autonomy must start early • The 5-Level Scale of Choice • What SDLL looks like in practice • The psychological shift required of teachers • The cultural realities of implementing autonomy SDLL reframes the teacher as facilitator rather than authority. But that transition is demanding, and it requires careful staging. If you are studying TESOL at master’s level, preparing for teaching practice, or reflecting critically on classroom control, this episode gives you a practical framework.
