Uganda’s opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), has called for the immediate suspension of Uganda from the Commonwealth, citing alleged violations of democratic principles and fundamental rights. The application, filed by Amsterdam & Partners LLP, urges the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) to suspend Uganda pending compliance with the Commonwealth Charter and the Harare Declaration. According to the submission, the request comes amid concerns over democratic governance, political repression, freedom of expression, and the rule of law following Uganda’s recent electoral disputes. The Commonwealth has previously suspended member states in similar circumstances, including Zimbabwe in 2002, raising questions about whether similar action could now be taken against Uganda. CMAG is expected to review the situation at its upcoming meeting, where the matter could be formally considered.
